2003 Fall Hiking Weekend

Upper Connecticut Valley of Vermont
and the White Mountains of New Hampshire

The Rip Van Winkle Hikers has reserved a number of rooms for the nights of October 17 and 18 at the
Silver Maple Lodge in Fairlee, Vermont. The Silver Maple Lodge is located in the Upper Connecticut River Valley of Vermont, just west of the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The location is central to several interesting areas including:

  • Appalachian Trail crossing the western White Mountains (10-30 miles east)
  • Hanover, NH with Dartmouth College (20 miles south)
  • White River Junction and Woodstock, VT (20/30 miles south)
  • Franconia Notch and the Old Man of the Mountains (45 miles northeast)
  • Kancamagus Pass across the White Mountains (50 miles east)
  • Green Mountains near Killington, VT (55 miles southwest)
  • The Club will schedule novice to advanced level hikes in the nearby White Mountains area on Saturday and perhaps a shorter walk on Sunday morning. The Appalachian trail passes just to the east in New Hampshire and several peaks ranging from 2900' to 4800' are accessible.
  • Directions: Fairlee, Vermont is most easily accessible via I-87 to the Massachusetts Turnpike Tpke (I-90) to I-91 north. It is located on VT Rte 5 (south) - ½ mile south of Exit 15. An alternate route would be to take I-87 north to NY/VT Rte 4 east to I-91 north, but that involves quite a bit of non-interstate driving.
  • The Club has reserved a number of rooms that will accommodate two or three people. We will be staying Friday and Saturday nights. In addition, I have located other nearby accomodations that could be used if needed.
  • Prices at the Silver Maple Lodge are a follows: double room ($250) and triple room ($295).

    The price includes the following:

  • Friday and Saturday nights accommodation at Silver Maple Lodge.
  • Continental breakfast on Saturday and Sunday mornings consisting of coffee, orange juice, hot rolls, pastries or coffee cake, fruit, and cold cereals.
  • A bagged lunch for Saturday's hike.
  • Dinner together Saturday night at Dowd's Country Inn in Lyme, New Hampshire. Price covers everything, but drinks. Full menu to be announced.
  • The above Price includes all hotel/meal taxes and the gratuity at the dinner Saturday night.
  • Check-in is 2:00 PM and Check-out is 11:00 AM.

Room Assignments: I am coordinating room assignments from here and will do my best to accommodate everyone at the lodge. Triple rooms are limited and priority there will be given to those traveling alone who may want to share a room with others. Please call or email for further information.

Should we fill the lodge and need extra lodging nearby, I have found alternative lodging at a local motel for about the same price for the weekend package.

Payment: The Silver Maple Lodge is requiring a deposit of $90 to hold the room. Checks can be made out to Rip Van Winkle Hikers - sent to c/o Rick Smith, 1922 Old Kings Highway, Saugerties, NY 12477. Payment must be received by August 26 at the latest.
