Minutes: Rip Van Winkle Hikers July 27, 2003 Meeting called to order at 7:05 p.m. by President Bob Saturn. Minutes of the May 19, 2003 meeting were approved. Guests: Nancy Desell, Theresa Concoti, Danielle ? and Todd? Treasurer's Report Opening Balance: $1001.13 Expenses: $890.00 Income: $1001.01 Present Balance: $1112.14 Membership: Sally Colclough reported that there were 15 new members to bring our total to 127 members. Correspondence: 1. An article entitled "Walking the Walk" that appeared in an Ulster Publishing summer supplement (June 2003, Summer in The Valley) was read because it contained information on the Club. 2. President Saturn gave a history of his correspondence/communication with CAMPMOR - in an effort to get some donated merchandise for the Banquet. 3. Bob Stinemire read a note from Charlotte Sperl regarding the Len Sperl Plaque (made by member Pat Fitzsimmons) that had been given to her by the Club. She indicated that it has been hung outside of the "sap shed" a place that Len spent many hours making his famous Maple Syrup. Announcements: 1. Rip Van Winkle Hats/T-shirts/Sweatshirts Inge Backhaus is collecting names of individuals who wish to purchase club hats/t-shirts or sweatshirts. When there are enough names for an order, she will send it in. 2. Dick Voloshen on Television A program to be aired on August 5th on Boston Channel 5 at 7:30 will have a segment on the Overlook Fire Tower and Dick Voloshen. Committee Reports: Sunshine Committee: No events Librarian: Elaine Hencke whet club member's appetite by describing one of the interesting articles that she came across in the Club's library. The material in the Library is available to Club members at meetings or by contacting Elaine. Rambles: The Weekend of September 20th the hike is North Point (from North Lake) Banquet: President Saturn thanked the Banquet Committee (Roger Brandt, Maria Walsh and Jamie Jones) for their work in making the annual banquet such a success. Forty-four people attended the Annual Banquet. That included six members who took the Orienteering Workshop offered by Roger Brandt and then went into the woods to complete the Orienteering Course. The winner was the team of Bob Saturn and Ellen Berlin. Chris Olney of the Catskill Center gave an interesting talk on the history and current projects of the Catskill Center. There was some discussion of how to involve more members in the Banquet. Fall Weekend: Rick Smith announced that the dates for the Fall Weekend were October 17 and 18th at Silver Maple Lodge, in Vermont (20 miles north of White River Junction.) A flyer detailing the event will go out to all members by snail and e-mail. Completed Hikes The Group and Hike Leaders reported on completed hikes. Trail Maintenance Report: All trails (with the exception of Poets Ledge) were maintained this Spring. The Club has extended its maintenance of the trail leading to Thomas Cole to include the section from the Camel's Hump up to the top of the mountain Hike Schedules: Schedules for June/July were passed out and discussed. The dates for planning upcoming hikes were announced. Old Business: 1. Club Liability No new information; however, President Saturn reminded all Hike Leaders (i.e., any member who leads a hike) to make sure that hikers read the text on the sign-in sheet (as opposed to just signing their John Hancock.) This will guarantee that hikers know their responsibilities for that hike. New Business: 1. Catskill Park: The Catskill Park will be 100 years old in 2004. President Saturn asked that any member interested in serving as the Club's Liaison to the Catskill Center, contact him. a. Donna Wamsley and Julie Ebert volunteered to lead a hike as part of the Celebration. 2. Winter Safety course: Dick Voloshen will act as the Club's Liaison for the winter safety course being organized by the Catskill Center. 3. Handicapped Hikers Theresa Concoti asked that she be allowed to hike with the club despite the fact that she has a history of seizures. After a lengthy discussion, Theresa agreed to a) get a medical note saying that she could hike and b) bring a friend to accompany her. Meeting adjourned 8:45 for hike planning.
